Native Way Featured Artist: Roger Tompkins |
"The Poetry of Roger Tompkins is a refreshing, sensitive insight into the power of personal love blended with his profound connection with nature which creates beautiful, real, and moving imagery, bold and often startling. He is a serious significent poet who touched me, writing obviously of what he knows and experiences, writing with freshness and vitality from his heart. Each poem draws me to the next. I want more! He gives me more and I am delighted!"

You Are the Fire
You are the fire I've spent my lifetime gathering kindling for,
the pine sweet wind I've spent a lifetime trying to touch,
the keyboard
I've wished to master,
the Symphony
I've strived to write.
You are the other side
of that boundary line
beyond which songs rise silently
aloft at best to stare...
and yet,
you are as much
a product of me
as I am an instrument of you,
and it is what we make
one with the other
that will walk away from us...
inevitably ...
alone and alive
like a piece of music
for distant ears.
It is to the touch of your lips
I attribute the life in my own.
Were it only my life
it would be of no consequence
but the whole of the universe
shall not draw breath
until I have kissed you again.
I play your body
to hear the music
my hands and soul
have come to expect
from this refuge... this place...
which envelops me
with its sound.
Again and again,
I consume its melody
which like the rustle of leaves
in the wind
or the splash of water on stone
need not be understood
or interpreted,
only known,
as though a private concert
within a universe of song.
Your face glows
like the mountain lilly
washed in last light
and I am drawn to you
as an elk to summer fields.
You fold like a moth
from the heat of the day
into silk
and enchant me yet again
as wings lift and you
float
toward me, as to light
